The Safe and Sound Program
The Safe & Sound Program is a service to ensure the safety of the senior citizen population in Mad River Township and the Village of Enon.
The Safe & Sound Program is a service to ensure the safety of the senior citizen population in Mad River Township and the Village of Enon. After enrolling in The Safe & Sound Program the Mad River Township Fire & EMS Department would come out to your residence and install a small key box to the outside of your home. Inside the key box there will be a key to your residence, only the fire department and police department would have access to this box. Every morning the resident would call 864-1995, the dispatcher would then log the time that you called, ensuring that you are ok. If the resident does not call by 10:00 AM the fire department would attempt to call. If no one answers the fire department or police department would come to your residence and try to make contact, if there is no response the department would access the key box and enter the residence to ensure the residence safety. If the resident is out of town or in the hospital they would simply call the special line and the firefighter would log it into the book, so they would expect to not hear from you.
The Safe and Sound Program was created by Captain James Routt and implemented in January of 2007. It’s geared toward elderly citizens living alone. Upon enrolling in the program the department will come to the participant’s residence and install a small key box on the outside. The box contains a key to the home which only fire and police personnel will be able to access. Each morning the participant would be required to call the fire department’s dispatcher to ensure that they were “Safe and Sound.” If the participant does not call by 10:00 am and no contact has been made that day with them, the fire or police department would respond to the residence and attempt to make contact using the key box if necessary. The program currently has 5 people in the community enrolled.
The program was created so that families would be able to go about their daily lives knowing that their loved ones were being checked on each day by the community’s fire and EMS department. Many elderly residents in the township live alone. The department responds to many elderly falls and illnesses at home, and many times the patients are unable to reach the phone in order to call for assistance. This program enables the department to ensure that the community’s residents are medically provided for and offers peace of mind to their families.
For residents or families that don’t need to be checked everyday but want the peace of mind that the department will be able to access your home in an emergency, we can assist you in purchasing a key box that only the department and police will be able to access. This option may be more suitable for citizen’s that fall often, are alone during the day and may have health problems, or as a safe guard.
